UA leadership says no furloughs but layoffs likely

University of Arizona President Robbins and interim Chief Financial Officer John Arnold told university staff on Tuesday that there would not be furloughs but there would likely be layoffs — as one measure to deal with its $177 million deficit.

University of Arizona interim CFO John Arnold, who is also the executive director for the Arizona Board of Regents, said layoffs will likely be in phases, starting with senior management. He hopes to have a fiscal year ‘25 budget set by mid-April. Then they will look at each college.

“And that’ll mean a changes-in-hiring plan for fiscal ‘25,” Arnold said. “And then we’ll have to see, can they meet those expenditure targets within their existing staff and facility or are we going to have to reduce some positions?”

The meeting with staff happened a day after Governor Katie Hobbs sent out a news release demanding a meeting with ABOR and UA leadership, saying that handling of the UA financial crisis is heading in the wrong direction. She scolded ABOR members for verbally attacking UA faculty and said that ABOR failed in their oversight role and university leadership was clueless about their own finances.
