Pima County employees will now receive a paid day off for Juneteenth. The county's board of supervisors approved adding the holiday at its meeting this week on a 4-1 vote.
The lone vote in opposition of adding Juneteenth as a county holiday was Steve Christy, the board's only Republican, who voiced his opposition before the vote.
"There's been no cost analysis, and the cost will have me voting against it," he said.
June 19th is commemorated federally as the date the last slaves were freed in Texas in 1865.
Pima County employees might not have that specific day off each year though.
In order to minimize impact on services, they will instead receive eight hours of administrative leave to be taken on the day of their choosing in June.
The county commemorates Cesar Chavez Day in a similar fashion each March.
