Through a Lens Darkly: Black Photographers and the Emergence of a People

This Independent Lens documentry looks at black photographers who recorded the lives of generations, from slavery to the present. Monday at 10 p.m. on PBS 6.

This is the story of the pioneering African-American photographers — men and women, celebrated and anonymous — who have recorded the lives and aspirations of generations, from slavery to the present.

The work of pioneering black photographers over the past 170 years is highlighted throughout the film. Their images help reclaim a sense of collective self-worth and humanity, and provide a rich history of African American contributions to the development of photography, both as an art form and a force to be reckoned with.
