Hollywood at Home will presents a film noir double feature beginning with the absorbing crime drama “Call Northside 777” starring Jimmy Stewart followed by the classic “The Big Sleep” starring Humphrey Bogart.
Call Northside 777 “Call Northside 777” is based on a true story of police corruption and hard-nosed investigative reporting in tough, working class Chicago neighborhoods. Stewart plays a reporter who responds to the plea of an immigrant mother, convinced that her son was wrongly convicted of murder and imprisoned 10 years ago. As Stewart somewhat reluctantly begins to investigate the decade-old case, he finds small discrepancies in the police investigation and subsequent prosecution. Gradually, the reporter becomes convinced that the convicted killer is innocent, but he has to overcome resistance from both the police and the political establishment in his quest to re-open the case.
The Big Sleep
Humphrey Bogart plays world-weary private detective Phillip Marlow, who accepts what should be a simple case, tracking down the man who’s blackmailing a spoiled rich girl, but nothing is simple in this twisty thriller that takes us on a scenic tour of the sordid underbelly of 1940s Los Angeles.
Hollywood at Home Special Double Feature, Saturday at 9 p.m. on PBS 6.
