Jake Holman is the engineer aboard the USS San Pablo on the Yangtzee River in 1926. The ship is nicknamed the Sand Pebble, so its crew is known as the Sand Pebbles. China is in the midst of a turbulent revolution, reflecting Jake’s general relationship with his captain, other sailors, the politics and economics around him, and himself. As a contentious person with a temper, Jake is a natural target for a corrupt system, frightened fighters on all sides, and his captain’s own crises.

Hollywood at Home presents The Sand Pebbles, Sunday at 2 p.m. on PBS 6.
