Voter turnout in the Congressional District 7 primary election landed at just under 19% across the border district.
Arizona Secretary of State Adrian Fontes approved the official canvass of the primary July 31. About 82,000 people cast ballots, for an overall turnout rate of 18.8%. Of the five counties in the district, Pima County reported the highest turnout of just over 21%.
The Pima County Elections Department lost power for 90 minutes after a monsoon storm moved over the area on election night, but Fontes said the department followed its required emergency response and ballot tabulation continued on schedule.
“Generators were deployed immediately. Ballot security was maintained throughout the outage. And despite flooding, delivery detours, tabulation resumed very quickly, and early results were released on schedule, which is great for that election department. This is a clear example of why it is that emergency planning matters and why testing those plans ahead of time is essential,” he said.
Former Pima County Supervisor Adelita Grijalva won the Democratic nomination with about 62% of the vote. She will face Republican Daniel Butierez, who received about 61% of the Republican primary votes, in the general election September 23rd.
The voter registration deadline for the special election is August 25.
