This year's monsoon officially begins this weekend. That means weather watchers are preparing their predictions for the annual Monsoon Madness competition.

Zack Guido with the University of Arizona Institute for Resilience notes rthat ainfall might happen sooner rather than later for cities east of Tucson.

"The onset of the monsoon tends to happen earlier for southeastern Arizona and southern New Mexico than it does as you move further north to Albuquerque and Flagstaff," he said.

That's important for those taking part in the contest because they must predict rainfall totals separately for July, August, and September in Albuquerque, Flagstaff and El Paso; along with Phoenix and Tucson.

The deadline to predict precipitation for July is June 30.
