From Sunday, June 1, through Sunday, August 31, the City of Tucson will operate cooling centers in various locations to provide safe, air-conditioned spaces during peak heat hours. The centers will be open daily from noon to 4 p.m., including the Juneteenth (June 19) and Independence Day (July 4) holidays.
Located along Sun Tran bus routes, the centers are easily accessible for residents, especially vulnerable populations such as seniors, children, and people experiencing homelessness.
City-Operated Cooling Centers:
- Donna Liggins Center, 2160 N. 6th Ave.
- El Pueblo Center, 101 W. Irvington Rd., Building #9
- Fred Archer Center, 1665 S. La Cholla Blvd.
- Freedom Center, 5000 E. 29th St.
- Morris K. Udall Center, 7200 E. Tanque Verde Rd.
- Randolph Center, 200 S. Alvernon Way
In addition to city-run centers, 23 Pima County libraries and designated heat respite locations offer further resources. A full map of cooling, respite, and hydration centers is available here.
The initiative follows Heat Week, recognized May 5–9 by the City of Tucson, Pima County, and the University of Arizona to raise awareness and improve coordination around heat-related issues. In 2024, the Pima County Medical Examiner recorded 146 heat-related deaths between April and October.
